The Effects of Vocabulary Expertise and Qualifications Knowledge in Reading Knowledge of Taiwanese EFL Pupils Peter Tze-Ming Chou

Abstract Many studies have shown that terminology knowledge and background expertise can help college students read and comprehend better. The more vocabulary students understand, the better they can decode and know what they browse. In contrast, background knowledge helps students make successful inferences. Therefore , this study looks at the effects of terminology knowledge and background know-how in an EFL reading comprehension test. The participants contained 159 pupils from a college in Southern Taiwan. The consequence of the study confirmed that the participants who received a list of vocabulary to study performed significantly better on the reading comprehension check than the individuals who counted on history knowledge. This led to a discussion in the realization about the need for vocabulary building for university EFL learners in Taiwan.
